HSBC Credit Cards In Sri Lanka
78
An Honest Review By HSBC Card Holder
All credit cards are not the same.
There are many different options available from banks all around the
world. Each comes with its own terms and limits. It has been my
experience that HSBC offers cards with the most favorable terms to
people in Sri Lanka. Let's take a look at my own experience with them
to show what I mean.
In 2002, I found myself in need of a
credit card. I applied for two different cards from two different
banks. One application was with HSBC. The other was with my local
bank where I had all my savings and current accounts. I was approved
by both banks.
HSBC issued me a card with a credit limit of
35000 rupees. They did not require me to put up any sort of deposit
to secure the account. My local bank also did not require any
additional deposit, but they only allotted me a credit limit of 20000
rupees. I was so disappointed that I called the bank and cancelled my
card.
Every six months that passed without my being late with
a payment, HSBC gave me a credit limit increase. After I had had the
card for two years, they offered to issue me a pre-approved Master
Card that came with a completely separate credit line from my
existing Visa card.
After using the card for a few years, it
was upgraded to the status of Gold Card. I was truly surprised last
month to learn that my account had been upgraded again to Platinum
status. In addition, I was told that I would not have to pay the
annual fee normally associated with a Platinum card. Instead, I would
enjoy Platinum status while only having to pay the Gold card annual
fee.
With all the news about identity theft in the world, many
people wonder about the security of their credit cards. With an HSBC
card, you are safe from internet hackers and identity thieves. I am a
FOREX trader and an internet marketer. In the course of my work, I
use my card for transactions over the internet quite frequently. HSBC
has called me several times to verify transactions when I used my
card to pay to a new site and they thought the charge appeared
unusual.
I realize that small, local banks do not have the
resources or the reach to provide this level of service to their
credit card customers. However, I do feel that they should make some
changes to their credit verification processes and work to improve
the services they offer to good customers.
I have been
extremely satisfied with the value of my HSBC credit card. I have
never had any major problems. My account is secure and safe from
identity thieves. They keep expanding the service they provide in
recognition of the fact I have been a faithful customer.
I
realize that not all customer experiences will be like mine.
Therefore, I invite everyone to post their own feelings about HSBC
and their credit cards below, regardless of whether the experience is
positive or negative.
There are many different credit cards
available for customers around the world. HSBC is one worldwide bank
that does recognize that Sri Lankans can be valuable customers. I
cancelled a card issued by my local bank because it did not come with
a credit limit or other terms that were as favorable to me as a
customer as the card issued by HSBC. This bank has since given me
several credit limit increases and advanced the level of my card up
to platinum.

Good post, I am thinking about buying a credit card for sometime and, now I feel that I should go with HSBC.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Good to learn about the HSBC credit cards.
This is very interesting and useful... and by the way congrats for being a platinum Card holder..!!
Sorry Chamilji, but I find nothing appealing about banks these days. Neither do I find hubs supporting and advertising this type of commercial endeavour useful on Hub Pages. They only care about the interest they make and are not some sort of paternal figure there for anyone's good...Bob. We would all be better off without these damn usurous pieces of plastc....
I like Standard Chartered Bank Credit
Card than HSBC Credit card because SCB allow us to buy goods on 60
months interest free installment scheme. I Think HSBC is giving only
24 months.
I agree with you on HSBC Bank customer service and periodical credit limit increases. But their charges / fees are high compared to other Sri Lankan local Banks.
Thanks for share this with us. Unfortunately, I don't have any credit card. I wasn't comfortable using this card. Well done, my friend. Cheers....
HSBC in sri lanka only operate in colombo and kandy, but they promote in other areas. People in other areas has to pay through commrcial bank, which they charge around 0.75% of the total bill and it is unfair. Therefore i never took a HSBC card.
I got my sampath bank gold card and I am really happy with the service and now I feel like having another credit card so as far as I know HSBC is one of the market leaders so I am going to try my luck on HSBC credit cards.
hmmm.... i feel quite happy now coz when i am reading this i have already applied for a hsbc credit card .. i hope i will be able to get one coz i am highly interested .
You may correct with periodic credit limit increases and upgrade but my opinion is HSBC card is very expensive. I am using Combank cards (Commercial Bank of Ceylon Plc).
Hey Guys! Don't fall in to Credit Card trap. About five years ago I was debt free man but I applied credit cards from almost all banks operating in Sri Lanka. I received five cards from 5 different banks. All of them from private banks not from a single state bank.
Initially I paid all my credit cards bills in full but after few years I started to pay part of the bills as I faced some kind of economic difficulties.
Currently my combined credit cards debts are amounted to more than Rs 700,000.00. I am paying them monthly minimum payable amount only.
So please use your credit cards wisely don't spend on unnecessary items. Try to pay your card bill in full every month.
Don't try to get more than one card. If you have more than one card like me you will definitely over use it.
My credit card worked well over internet purchases. It's a VISA Classic card and I got it through Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Coporation(HSBC) and I even registered in the Verified by VISA system and HSBC's Internet banking service.I did every possible thing for security and all the rest of it,but ClickBank always rejects my credit card. Please help me.
This is very true. I enjoy having credit card from HSBC.
HSBC - Highly Stupid and Bluffing Cartoons

How about Seylan Bank Credit Cards? Is anyone having experience with using Seylan Bank Credit Cards? I heard that Seylan Bank’s interest rates are low compared to other banks.
So i've been an HSBC Master Gold user for over 5 years, no problem as yet. I was today (08-12-11)going thro the site for offers this season and my eyes fell on the 'terms and conditions' of the cash back offer. It said "This offer is not valid for manual or online transactions" Is there a catch???
Thanks for share this with us. I like Commercial Bank Master Card. what's the difference Visa and Master ??
Any special offers for HSBC Credit Cards holders in this season?
This is very useful article. keep on writing
I am sorry for this off topic comment but since this article related to Banks and Credit cards I wish to ask an open question regarding Paypal.
Why Paypal only allow send money from Sri Lankan Paypal Accounts? Is it something to do with Sri Lankan Banking law and regulation?
I asked this from Paypal but they just replied “At the comment we only allow send money from Sri Lanka and we are unable to give you further explanation.”
I really need to receive money via Paypal :(
This is very true
Don't fall in to credit card trap. Use Debit Cards as an alternative.
Good advice, But I don't use any credit card.
HSBC does seem to have many facilities for banking across the globe. While travelling, I have noticed that this is one of the few banks that has branches in most countries.
Thanks for SHARING.
I am also using this card and so far not faced any problem except excessive marketing from HSBC, if you spend more. Thanks for sharing and pinned this page..

Me also a satisfied customer, specially with their internet banking (utility bill payment), with its intutive UI compared to SCB. And I also remember once how I got a temporary credit uplift on may credit card while I was at LankaBell trying to pay for a CDMA line in just 15min.
